Tracing Your Family Tree – A Hobby with Extra Meaning
Do you know where your ancestors lived? Do you know how your family came to be where they are? Have they lived in the same place for a long time? What kind of a life did your ancestors lead? These are all questions most of us have asked ourselves at one time or another. These questions stem from our need to feel a sense of history and a sense of where we have come from, a sense of who we are.
While tracing your family tree is a hobby, it is possibly the most meaningful hobby in which you will ever engage. It is not an inexpensive hobby. Although there are free resources that you can take advantage of to accomplish the goal of tracing your family tree, eventually you will most likely need to pay for copies of records, certificates, and other documents. You may also wish to purchase genealogy software to help you in your search. If you are really zealous about tracing your family tree, you may even end up traveling to another country. How exciting!
However, the best place to start your journey is right at home, recording all the names and birth dates of your immediate and extended family. You will also want to talk to all your relatives, especially the older ones, as they will know stories of family members long since departed. They will know names and information that may help you continue on your search and they may even have copies of certificates and documents that will help lead you in the right direction.
You may even have one or more family members that have beat you to the punch and have already started gathering information on your family history. You may be able to work with them or take up where they left off. Either way, you are sure to find loads of information and documents that will be of value in your search.
Ultimately, you will need to move beyond your family members and search for birth, death, and marriage records at a records office, library, or family history center. For information that dates back prior to the late 1830s you will need to look for religious records through local parishes. These are the routes you will need to take when you need to look in other countries as well. Check with the local authorities to find out where you can search for official records. They will be able to point you in the right direction.
Most of all, treasure your journey into the past. It can be very exciting to find out how your ancestors lived, what kind of work they did, the kinds of challenges they faced and the triumphs they enjoyed. A look into the lives of these people may help you understand your own family in the here-and-now. Besides, it will give you great stories to tell your own children someday.
