Where Do You Come From?
More articles about Family Genealogies:
This is a question many of us ask ourselves. Having a sense of history and belonging is important to people. Knowing where we came from, who our ancestors were, helps us get in touch with our own identity. You may find out that you came from a family of survivors. Maybe your family was once very wealthy, or part of nobility. Maybe your family led an honest life as simple peasants. Whatever the case, it is incredibly interesting to peak into the past and get a glimpse of the people who helped make us who we are today.
How do you go about such a daunting task as researching your family tree? Oddly enough, to find out about the past you need to begin in the present. You need to record the names and information of all living family members. You may even have access to birth, death, and marriage certificates that you can use to obtain information such as maiden names and places of birth.
Along with gathering the basic information about your living relatives, you need to talk with those family members, particularly the older ones. The elder people in a family often have great stories about people who are no longer alive, people you never met. Listen to these stories and you may learn how your family came to live where they now reside, where they came from, what your grandparents and great grandparents were like. You may run across pictures and diaries that will help you in your search and you may find that other family members have already done some of the research on the family tree already. If they have, you will have a lot of your work done for you, so get copies of all the records and documents they have and use that as your starting point.
From this point on, your research will take the form of tracking down records. Births, marriages, and deaths have been officially recorded since the late 1830s, so take advantage of these records. Before this, you will need to look up parish records to trace your family history.
The internet is a great resource when tracing back your family history. It can link you with information in other countries and you can find many records on the internet. Eventually, you will need to go to a records office, library, or family history center and look up records on microfilm or fiche. It may also be worth your while to purchase some genealogy software to help you with your search.
Ultimately, the research to trace your family tree is a journey that can be very rich and rewarding. Taking this journey will help you connect to your sense of self and help you gain an understanding of your family and your ancestry. This research can be a long process, but along the way you will find gems of information that you will be able to share with your other family members. You will appreciate what you find, but they may appreciate it even more.
